First visit

What to expect as a new patient

New here? The full walkthrough is on our New Patients page.

Do I need a referral to become a patient?
No referral is required. You can schedule directly online or call the office. If you already have a primary care provider, specialist, or imaging report and want us to coordinate care, we can do that when appropriate.
What happens at the first appointment?
We start with your story, symptoms, goals, and what daily life requires from your body. Then we perform a movement-based exam and focused orthopedic or neurologic checks when needed. After that, we explain what we found, what it likely means, and what your options are. When appropriate, conservative care may begin the same day.
How long does the first visit take?
First visits usually take longer than follow-up visits because we want time to listen, examine, explain findings, and outline next steps. Many first visits are usually around 20–30 minutes, depending on the case and what needs to be reviewed.
Will I be adjusted on the first visit?
Sometimes, yes. If your exam suggests chiropractic care is appropriate and you are comfortable moving forward, care may begin the same day. If imaging, referral, or a different next step is more appropriate, we will explain why.
What should I wear?
Comfortable clothing you can move in is best. Athletic wear works well. We may look at posture, range of motion, walking, bending, or how your hips, shoulders, spine, feet, and knees are working together.
What should I bring?
Bring any relevant imaging reports, medication lists, previous diagnoses, and notes about what makes symptoms better or worse. You can also review first visit information before you arrive.

Clear pricing before care begins

The full breakdown is on our Pricing page.

Do you take insurance?
Balanced Chiropractic keeps pricing clear and upfront instead of using complicated insurance rules. Many patients use HSA/FSA funds or submit detailed receipts to insurance for possible out-of-network reimbursement.
Can I use HSA or FSA funds?
Many patients use HSA or FSA funds for eligible care. Check with your plan if you are unsure about your specific benefits or documentation requirements.
Will I know the cost before treatment?
Yes. We review pricing and recommendations before care begins so you can make an informed decision. You should not feel surprised, rushed, or pressured.
Do you offer memberships or care packages?
See the current options on the Pricing page. We keep plans simple, transparent, and focused on what actually fits your goals.
Can I get a receipt for out-of-network reimbursement?
Yes. When helpful, we can provide detailed receipts for patients who want to submit to insurance for possible out-of-network reimbursement.

Safety & imaging

Conservative care starts with safety

We screen first, explain clearly, and refer when another provider or imaging is the better next step.

Is chiropractic care safe?
Chiropractic care is generally considered safe when it is provided by a trained, licensed chiropractor and matched to the right patient. We screen for red flags, explain options first, and use conservative techniques. If something does not seem appropriate, we will not force it.
Will chiropractic care hurt?
Care should be matched to your comfort level and exam findings. Some patients feel mild soreness after a first visit, similar to starting a new activity, but treatment should not feel forced. Tell us what you are feeling so we can adjust the approach.
Do I need X-rays or an MRI before seeing you?
Not usually. Imaging is not required for every patient. We decide case by case based on your history, symptoms, exam findings, trauma history, red flags, and whether imaging would change the next step.
When should I seek urgent care instead of chiropractic care?
Seek urgent evaluation for progressive weakness, numbness in the groin or saddle area, loss of bowel or bladder control, fever with severe pain, unexplained weight loss, major trauma, chest pain, or symptoms that are rapidly worsening.
What if chiropractic care is not the right fit?
We will tell you. Conservative care includes knowing when to refer, when to recommend imaging, when to coordinate with another provider, and when urgent evaluation is more appropriate.

Chiropractic adjustments

Questions about adjustments

Learn more on the Chiropractic Adjustments service page.

What is a chiropractic adjustment?
A chiropractic adjustment is a specific treatment used to improve joint motion, reduce irritation, and support better movement. The goal is not simply to “crack” something — the goal is to help the body move and function better.
What is the difference between cracking and adjusting?
The sound is not the goal. Some adjustments make a popping sound and some do not. The important part is the intent, specificity, and how the adjustment fits your exam findings and goals. Read more: Cracking vs. Adjusting: What’s the Difference?
Do you offer gentle options?
Yes. Care can be modified based on comfort level, age, pregnancy, irritability of symptoms, and personal preference. If you are nervous, tell us. We will walk you through options before doing anything.
How many adjustments will I need?
It depends on the problem, how long it has been present, how irritable symptoms are, and how your body responds. Most patients start with a short trial of care and re-check progress so the plan stays realistic and measurable. Read more: How Many Chiropractic Adjustments Do I Need?

Spinal decompression & orthotics

Questions about specialized services

These services are recommended only when they fit your exam, symptoms, and goals.

Do you offer spinal decompression?
Yes. Balanced Chiropractic offers spinal decompression for appropriate disc, nerve, sciatica, and radiating pain cases. We screen first to make sure it is a reasonable fit.
Who is a good candidate for spinal decompression?
Decompression may be considered when symptoms suggest disc or nerve irritation and the exam supports it. It is not for every back pain case, and it is not a replacement for proper evaluation. Start with an exam so we can decide whether it makes sense.
Do you offer custom orthotics?
Yes. We offer custom orthotics when foot mechanics may be contributing to foot, ankle, knee, hip, or low back stress.
How do I know if I need orthotics?
Orthotics may be considered when foot posture, walking mechanics, shoe wear, or recurring foot, ankle, knee, hip, or back symptoms suggest the feet are part of the stress pattern. Read more: Custom Orthotics: 9 Signs Your Feet Need Support

Common conditions

Questions about symptoms and pain patterns

Not sure which condition fits? Start with Conditions We Treat.

Can you help with low back pain or sciatica?
Yes. We commonly help with low back pain and sciatica by identifying the likely driver, such as sitting strain, lifting irritation, disc or nerve involvement, hip mechanics, or movement sensitivity.
Can you help with neck pain, headaches, or migraines?
Yes. We commonly help with neck pain, posture strain, tech neck, tension patterns, and headache or migraine-related complaints. We also screen for symptoms that should be evaluated urgently.
Do you help with disc herniation or disc degeneration?
Yes. We help many patients with disc-related patterns through conservative care, education, movement guidance, and spinal decompression when appropriate. Start here: Disc Herniation and Degeneration Care.
Do you treat shoulder, hip, knee, foot, or ankle pain?
Yes. Care may include evaluation of the spine and extremities because pain is often connected to movement patterns, load tolerance, joint mechanics, or foot support. Explore shoulder pain, hip pain, knee pain, and foot and ankle pain.
Can you help after a work injury or lifting injury?
Yes. We often help patients with work and lifting injuries by identifying whether the pattern looks more like a strain, disc irritation, SI joint irritation, overload, or another movement-related issue.
Can you help after a car accident or whiplash?
Yes. We see patients after auto accident and whiplash injuries for neck stiffness, headaches, back pain, delayed soreness, and movement limitations. We screen for red flags and help guide next steps.

Clear care includes knowing when to refer

When chiropractic may not be the first step

Conservative care starts with safety. We screen for red flags and will recommend urgent care, imaging, or referral when your symptoms suggest something outside the scope of chiropractic care.

Seek urgent evaluation for red flags Progressive weakness, numbness in the groin or saddle area, loss of bowel or bladder control, fever with severe pain, unexplained weight loss, major trauma, chest pain, or rapidly worsening symptoms should be checked right away.
Not sure what your symptoms mean? If symptoms are not an emergency but you are unsure where to start, we can help determine whether conservative care is appropriate or whether another provider should be involved.
